Trans shift shaft seal problem/replacement question

Hi All,

I have a TH350 transmission and have traced my only "current" leak of transmission fluid back to the Shif Shaft Seal on the drivers side of the transmission. To start, I did not make the score marks on the transmission near the seal (previous owner). Anyways, I removed the linkage and was able to easily remove the old seal with a sharp pick tool. I then purchased a new seal shown in photos below that has metal on one side and rubber seal on the other side. I gently slid it over the shaft, then took a socket and tapped it into place. STILL LEAKING. So my question is: Can I put some sort of liquid seal in there along with a new/or current seal (I bought 3 in case I messed the new seal up). Or does it look like a lost cause due to the damage done to the transmission housing area (from previous owner)? Also, How far back to you tap the seal in? ANY ADVISE IS APPRECIATED. Thanks in advance.
