Dana 70 or 70 HD

I have a 76 c 30 and read some where that the difference between the two axles is the Dana 70 has 3in axle tubes and the HD 4in. Is this the OD measurement? I am trying to repalce the gear set one web site shows a 10.25in gear and another 10.5in. Could this just be a missprint? I am waiting on a repy from there tech support. Does any one have any ideas on this? Also is there any brand of gear someone would recomend or one to stay away form not doing any regular heavy pulling.
