Thermostat housing groove for thermostat?

So my truck didn't have a thermostat in it.
Should there be a recessed groove for the thermostat on the part on the left, like the one on the right has?
I can see there is a little ring around there. I almost looks like some old gasket got pressed in there. Wondering if that's normal, or if I should dig it out.
