The right side mirror should be mounted per instructions for the 1972. i.e. slightly farther back than the earlier years. There are a couple of old-new threads showing the exact location for the 72.

I have a 71 with the passenger mirror mounted in the 'original 71' position and it's almost useless. If I ever have to repaint the passenger door that useless mirror is getting moved back per the 72 design update.
