starter woes

as the snow starts to melt here in the great white north, I have been trying to replace the starter. I bought a replacement. After soldering on a new terminal end on the yellow wire and new positive battery cable end after the other one broke off, I installed the starter only to find the old bolts are an inch too long, so off t o parts source and they had nothing so off to cdn tire and had to buy two packages of three size starter bolts for 20 bucks, got home and the 4 inch bolt I need has a knurled shaft above the threads which is too wide to fit in the starter second hole bolt opening. Figured why grind it down when I can return the bolts and get proper ones cheaper now that it isn't sunday and piston ring is open. Anyone else have troubles like this or I am just special? The engine is a 402.
