Changing fuel pump

I'm going to have to replace the fuel pump on my 402. I've read on here to remove the short bolt on the front of the block and run a longer bolt to hold the rod up. The only problem is I don't have bolt in there at all. It doesn't leak oil out of the hole either. I'm not looking to fix something that's not broke, but I'm just wondering if this is normal. I thought I read that if the bolt wasn't replaced it would leak oil.
