Steering Problem Please help

My 1985 C10 has a loose steering wheel. It has a tilt column and is not loose just the steering wheel. I had a mechanic check it out he says there is a bearing in there that is bad and that i should replace the whole column but i don't have money to buy a new or used column and then have him put it in. I did find a bearing kit on ebay . Can u just replace the bearing or do I really need a whole column ? any help would be great Also does anybody know of any good shops im in Kansas city area that could just replace the bearing if that could fix the problem so wont be paying more then needed.
