Shift rod

Ok folks, I'm running a 700r4 in a 70 model short Stepside and my shift rod keeps coming loose from the column. The rod is almost to short, the end of the rod is flush or just below the top of the little clamp a on the column but it does clamp and the bolt is tight. Any suggestions? Cable shift maybe, lengthen rod somehow, etc?
