Backspace question

Is the 15" rim the only issue with backspacing and an ECE 2.5 spindle? I'm curious if the bigger size rims will work fine without modifying the spindles. I.E Tierod boss in spindle as they are hitting my wheel now, along with the A-ARM. I already modified the a-arm gutter for clearance but the tierod spindle is still hitting the rim. Is it the diameter of the larger rims that makes them ok? Even if they have a bigger backspace wouldnt there still be interference issues? Or no, since everything tucks back in the wheel?
