2000 GMC running hot?

My dad has a 2000 GMC 1/2 ton ext cab P/U w the small V8(size escapes me right now). Last summer he noticed when he towed it would run a little hot. He was convinced it was the transmission bc the truck now has 150,000 + miles on so he had it rebuilt. That did not fix this problem so he went ahead and replaced the water pump but this did nothing either. The truck is not burning oil, using any water ect. Runs perfect but you can put an empty 20 ft HD low boy behind it and it will climb to about 235 or so. Never overheats. Do these lil motors just run hot under a load?
