1982 scottsdale door issues???

I have a 1982 chevy scottsdale 3/4 6.2 diesel, i cant open the drivers side door from the outside only the inside, i took off the inner door pannel to have a look at things all i can see is when i hit the black push button on the outside handle theres a rod on the inside kinda L shaped that moves up and down and i dont know what it connects to any help? maybe someone has a diagram of how it goes together?
