Dana 60 diff cover question

Hey guys.....have a question. I have a Dana 60 front axle that has a differential cover that has raised ribs between the bolt holes. The manual says this design is a gasket style seal and NOT any type of silicone sealant. With that said. ...I had asked a mechanic and the suggested I could use RTV on it anyways. Has anyone have an opinion or experience with this?? Thanks in advance
