Charcoal Canister Removal Question

Can any one explain the charcoal canister removal procedure. I know you will need a vented gas cap, but what about the vacuum ports on the carb. I read the canister goes bad over time, can you substitute one from a later model GM truck ? This is all aimed at eliminating a vacuum leak on my 350 with factory intake and original Quadrajet......
