Horn Help

I have been searching through the forum for horn help but have not found exactly what I'm looking for, so here goes.

I have a 72 c10, and the PO must have had a vendetta against horns, because there is nothing left of it. I have the wiring diagrams, so I understand most of it, and see how the relay is hooked up and everything, and there is a ground that goes to the base of the steering column. From there, I don't really understand the wiring. How does the ground wire get up to the steering wheel? How does the contact ring ground the circuit when the horn is pressed, and set off the alarm? I'm using the grant install kit, and by contact ring I mean the piece that the plunger is wired to, that is inserted into the horn cap.
