Failing fuel pump Question

I have been chasing what I thought was a Qjet problem but wondering if instead I have a bad fuel pump.? At idle should a stock 350 fuel pump completely fill up a inline clear plastic fuel filter ? If not I think I found my problem. Truck was running ok but choke was not working properly, took it to a friend who knows Qjets well. After I picked it up it ran great but when I gave it any throttle it would die and even backfire thru carb ? WTF now, then I noticed the half empty fuel filter as I was checking things again. Any suggestions would be helpful because it's cold and snowing, no fun changing fuel pumps ....
