media blasting

hey guys, i got my hands on a decent 1956 stepside bed. its dark red. no rot. one fender has a dent on top that was filled with bondo years ago and now half of the bondo is cracked and missing
can you advise me on media blasting? a friend of mine has a great big air compressor i can use, so im thinking of buying a blaster and blasting my bed rather than pay a company to do it.

what media do you recommend?

do i need to bother with the tailgate? should i just scuff up the tailgate and spray some gray primer over it? at some point ill probably have a body shop paint the bed. are they gonna strip off rattlecan primer either way?
i want it to look presentable next summer. a bed in primer is fine for now....
