Tempature sensors pre 88 vs 88 and up

When I put the 1972 427 TB into my 93 dually I used the 93 diesel temp sender with an adapter fitting. Even though I installed the adapter and then milled it off flush with the head the temp readings are about 20-30 cooler on the gauge than the motor. This is likely due to the shielding effect of the adapter.
Now with the 402 based 434 going in my 98 k3500 crew I'm wondering if I can't change the plug on the end of the temp sensor wire and run the new 1972 type sensor for the gauge in an effort to get more accurate readings. Thoughts anyone?
