clutchless torque converters???

i spoke to a guy at aamco today. really just to get comparison prices on installs, rebuilds, info etc.

they dont get into 700r4 swaps apparently. just rebuilds, but in talking about the lockup, he said some guys forego that by installing a 'clutches' torque converter. i did a search and couldn't find any real info on this. can anyone enlighten me on this and is it a better way to go than trying to hook up an electronic lockup?
