Drive shaft spacer question

Has anybody used a 1" drive shaft spacer? What is it used for? How about the 1" transfer case lowering kit? What is it used for?
If anybody has any input on these two subjects, please let me know.
Also, does anybody know if they make a longer peice for the rear drive shaft of a 77 K-20 (1 piece drive shaft, long bed) where the u-joint hooks to the rearend yoke, there is a slined female part (the piece the u-joint is attached to on the drive shaft) that slides up and down a male spline that is attached to the big tube of the drive shaft? Or do I need to just have the drive shaft lengthened?
Thanks,
Dana
