Don't mean to highjack the conversation, but I'd like to think that in a legit instance such as this that a new title/ID plate could be issued by the DMV or Rosette rivets could be legally obtained for this situation, especially a legit body shop. I'm thinking the shop probably has this covered.

I made the silly mistake of removing my ID plate in 1986 for a paint job, fortunately the man painting it was a manager of a big body shop and he was able to get the right rivets to put it back on. After he read me the riot act.
