I hate to say it, but I own two cars, one chevy elky and one VW cabriolet and I love both equally. I've got an '86, which is 5 years older than your car? You can do a lot of fun things with A1 frame. And forget about hunting down a scirocco 16v engine. If you're going to do a swap you get a mid 90's 1.8L Jetta engine dual overhead cam and shove it in there with the right header mods. It will be tight fit but you've got so much more room to improve... And that price was a steal for that car. I've lived in San Dieog and Austin and cabriolet's are never cheap.
