Truck cuts off when we put it in reverse or drive

I just bought my son a '77 C20 with the 292 straight 6. We put new plugs, wires, pcv valve, and rebuilt the carb. It will start and idle now, but when we put it in reverse or drive it cuts off.The carb is the Rochester monojet me #17057008. This carb has an electric choke and throttle solenoid. Both have male electrical connectors that have no wires going to them. I am thinking I could run a wire from either the starter or the ignition coil hot side to these connectors, but am not sure? Can someone help me out here?
