Question about a brake light switch

Hey everybody,
Since my 62's turn signals and taillights work but my brake lights don't, I thought I'd replace my brake light switch. It's the old two prong variety, but here's my question. Neither prong on the old one or new one seems to have a marking, so can you just attach either wire to either prong, or is it trial and error to get it right? I put it in this afternoon and still don't have lights, so I was thinking I might need to swap the wires, but I thought I'd check here.
