What is this and why di I have one?

What is going on ing this photo....is that a pressure sender or a switch? And if it is a switch what does it turn on or off

edit: I should add that this is the fuel filter on my '75 HV70 with a Detroit 6v53, and I do not have a fuel pressure gauge... so is there supposed to be an auto shutdown or a warning light ?
