Manual Steering Downgrade Question

Would it be dumb of me to downgrade my '74 V8 2WD manual non ACed short bed truck to a manual steering box? It has 15x7 wheels so nothing big and wide.

Why do I want to do such a thing?

In the spirit of hot rodding I am wondering what it would drive / handle like, and less parts means less parts to break / leak.

My buddy recently picked up a '73 Dodge 4x4 truck with manual steering only and it drives fine, he says, though I haven't driven it yet, and it has large mud tires.

So is there a manual steering box I can just bolt right up or are we talking brain surgery and retrofitting here?
