I think starting in 67 they indented the frame but ours aren't done that way so we need the stand-off. I can't remember where I got my brackets. It was before I was aware I could get them here. The inner one sits inside against the frame. The angle was off but not as much as in the picture above. I have about 1/2" Pitman arm to frame clearance and on the idler arm side it is about 3/4".

The 67 collapsible shaft that I used worked out to be the same length as the solid shaft it replaced.

I know a guy with our model panel truck that I think was loaded with firewood and he didn't fair to well after hitting a truck of much greater size. A collapsible shaft may not have made a difference.
