Speedometer question

I have replaced my transmission and now I have no speedometer or odometer. I have removed the cable from the transmission and spun it and it works, I replaced the gear in the transmission with the one that was on my old transmission. Nothing! I put the gear on the cable and it fits good. I pulled the cable and put a small screwdriver in the gear and tried to turn it both ways. I seems tight and will not turn. I looked into the hole and the drive gear looks fine. The driven gear looks fine too. Could the cable be just too long as it looks like the area where the driven gear stops is kind of shiny like the cable could be hitting? I searched for speedo problems and one fellow said that he took his to the dealer and the mechanic shortened the cable and it worked fine. Could I just take a 1/4" off the cable and see if that fixes it?

Thanks for any information.

Ron
