transporting a pickup bed

I bought a pickup bed and will have to drive 1000 miles home. I am trying to come up with a way of transporting it w/o having to use a trailer. I was thinking about c-clamping the truck rails together. If I were to do this, is a '97 truck bed as wide as '72 bed? Does anyone know how reliable this is? What other ways have you guys come up with? Thanks
