steering wheel repair

i have the original steering wheel in my 68 c-10. its in great shape other than one thin (maybe .010 wide) crack on the 3 spokes right at the hub. i sanded it down now im ready to try and fix those cracks. i bought the repair kit from eastwood. how far down should i grind out the crack and how wide should i go. i have an idea that i should go all the way down to metal rod and about a 1/4 wide. anyone have good results repairing one.
