I was thinking that was one piece, if you assume for a minute that your new piece is not broken then it sounds like you have something that fell behind it while you where tightening it down and it is in a bind.
Can you unscrew the 3 screws holding it and let it loose and then see if it will allow you to pull it back out the way you normally would?
