K10 Speedometer question - T221

My 60 K10's speedometer has not worked in over 30 years. While being used on our farm it wasnt so important, but now that I plan on using it on the road I need it. I removed the cable from the transfer case and spun it with a drill - the speedometer worked fine. At the end of the cable on the transfer case side was a plastic extention (for lack of a better word) that is about an 1" or so long. It is square on one end and open on the other, but the open end is rounded so the cable just spins in it - reason why its not working.

I took the gear out and looked at everything and all is fine. The cable ends flush with housing, is this normal? Without the extension it will not reach, but is the extension oem?

Is it possible the cable is pushed up too far into the speedometer head? Or perhaps in backwards? Most cables have a clip to keep it from moving out of the housing too far, is this missing or perhaps on the head side?
