Turn signal question

Quick turn signal question. I am in the middle of installing my painless harness. Going to do the lighting tonight. No parking, headlights or turn signal connected yet. But dash is all wired including the turn signal indicators. When I tested the hazards the indicators flashed, but when I try the turn signals, they do not flash, they just turn on. I tried switching my flasher on the fuse block and nothing happened. Does the build need to be wired in order for it to work? Or do I have a problem? I installed a new turn signal switch in the column. Should I be worried

Thoughts?
