help with shifter rods

Well I managed to get my hands on an A833 with the "hybrid" bell, and shifter, etc, but the shifter rod links that came with it don't fit (yeah i overpaid for it, but it's what i wanted). My question is, has anyone had success cutting and re-welding shifter rods (cut, reweld and maybe put a sleeve or the cut part)? I have a couple lying around I can cut and re-weld and re-bend to make them work, wondering if it has been done or am I asking for trouble, trying to not to pay the outrageous amount being asked for the original ones. Or does anyone know other tranny links that can be used instead of the original. Thanks in advance..
