Fuel Gauge Issue

I have a 1972 Chevy C10. I have an issue with my fuel gauge that i just can not seem to understand. My gauge shows pin well below the E. When i start the truck it jumps up a little so i know there is power to it. I took it apart on my own and forced the pin back above the E, but by the time i connected the cluster back up, the pin dropped well below the E again. Do you have any idea what this may be? I appreciate any assistance with this.
