Well crap. There are some serious fitment issues with this 5.3. If I relocate the steering and notch the top web of the frame, it will fit, but I'm entertaining other options.

Option 1 is to stick with the original plan and use the 5.3. This means relocating the steering box/column and notching the frame so my shorty hugger headers will clear the rails. I would probably use a later box ('60-gmt400) and bolt it to the outside of the frame forward of the front axle.

Option 2 is to pick up a 250 or 292. I think this option is definitely the simplest route I shouldn't have to notch the frame, and I should be able to keep the original steering. I won't have to set up the gas tank for a fuel pump to run the 5.3 or any of the wiring or computer (though that won't really be a big deal).
