My new 71 swb Cheyenne - please school me!!

I just picked up this local 1971 swb Cheyenne. Decently loaded with A/C, posi and marker lights. It had been sitting for a few years and I just brought it back to life today. Pretty original truck until I popped the hood - 383 Stroker, decked, angle plug heads, Weiand, Holley, Accel and so on. My hot rod days are over so I'll be looking for an orignial 350. The truck is an early 71 - door sticker date is Sept. 1970. Here's my questions:
1) Can someone explain the VIN sequential number? I thought GM started with 100001 and went from there. This one starts with a 6.
2) Did 71 trucks have the upper booster brace (from back of booster to firewall) like 72's had? This one has lower, but no upper.
