Question for the Silverado guys

Hi guys,
Been on the 67-72 forum for a while now but new to the later model Silverado forums. Just picked up a sweet 2002 Silverado 1500 that I am really excited to own. Even though it's a 1500, it has a hood from a 2500. Anyway there is no insulation on the underside of the hood and the guy I bought the truck from said it isn't needed. Is this true? I have seen a lot of these trucks with peeling clear coat, especially on the hood so I was thinking maybe the insulation would help prevent this. What is the consensus on if the insulation is needed or not? I figure GM put it there for a reason. Does anyone know the part numbers for this insulation on a HD2500 hood?
Thanks!
