Power Steering Gear Box

I'm upgrading my suspension and steering a few parts at a time and I want to replace my existing manual steering box with a new "quick ratio power steering gearbox". I do not want to purchase the entire power steering unit, hoses, pully, mount, etc at this time. I will do all that when I upgrade the motor in the future. My question is, can I install a power steering gear box and not hook up the power steering pump to it? Will it still work? The way I understand it is the gearbox will operate just like a manual gearbox since the power steering unit is not hooked up. I want to make sure I won't ruin the new gearbox using it like this.
