I don't think you need the original strap as long as it's mounted good. My bosses 04 Duramax has the original spare and hoist cable system that works perfectly fine and this truck is his chase truck when he Races down in Mexico and has been since brand new. Also it's not driven lightly I just installed a new lift and all new suspension components cause the original was all clapped out from running flat out across the desert through washes and all even the factory skid plates were mangled from the abuse this truck has seen and the spare is still hanging without issues other than a couple of scuffs from bottoming out. Lol
