problem replacing e-brake cable

My emergency brake cable is broken and frayed at the end and needs replacement. It is the piece that goes from the pedal to halfway down the frame. My problem is that I can't figure out how to get it out to replace it.
Where it attaches to the pedal, it has a ball on the end of it and it looks like it can't fit through the firewall. Do I have to take the whole pedal assembly apart and out to replace this cable? Also can I just buy new cables from any dealer. Thanks guys
