71 locking hub question

A couple weeks ago my driver side spindle nut backed off and took out everything from the knuckle out. So I got my upgraded parts installed and I get to the locking hubs and there's a large tapered spring behind the locking mechanism. Now, my passenger side has the spring and the drivers side the spring got mangled.

My family's had this truck since 1983 and when my dad bought it it had warn premium hubs on it.

I went to 4 wheel parts yesterday and they explained to me that spring isn't needed.

Any help would be appreciated

Here's the spring I might need.
