Trailing Arm Crossmember Modificaation - Pic included

So I am doing a slam on a 72 c-10, this is a low budget build, so I am not going to spend unnecessary money if possible.

I have steel, I have experience in welding, I just want your opinion.

Why don't we cut the low part of the Trailing arm cross member flat and reinforce it with 1/4" flat bar? As I said, it is going to be slammed, so I don't think there as any reason I still need this part to hang so low.

See red line where I want to cut and add the flat bar.
