steering column swap.man.2auto ?

I want to swap my steering column on a 78 from man. to auto but was wondering on the socket on the frame for a man. tranny is on the bottom of the frame and on a auto the socket for the shift mech. is on the top of the frame. Will it still work on the bottom socket.I can,t see anyway I can drill holes in the upper frame to put in a new socket
