Changing rear end

I bought a 307 rear end hub to hub from a guy who said it came from a late 70 chevy and it was 1/2 inch longer on each side. He also told me it was a direct bot in. Nothing needed to be changed. From my measurements my old rear is 57 inches from the back of the hub all the way across and the new one is 58. Has anyone run across this?

Thanks
