Need help with Clutch install

This should be a fairly simple question to answer. I'm putting the new clutch in and am at the point of reattaching the clutch fork and installing the new throwout bearing to it. The question is: does the bearing just sit in the fork, or is there supposed to be some spring or retainer or something that holds the bearing on the fork? The old one had no such thing and was just resting in the fork. The reason I ask is because all the manuals are mentioning a retainer.
Any help is very much appreciated.
