"6,000 GROSS" stickers on WA state trucks?

My '72, which was used to haul a camper and spent its life in Washington state, came with two identical stickers, one on each lower front corner of the bed. They read "6,000 GROSS".

I have seen similar stickers on similar-era trucks in that area, and I'm wondering if anyone can provide an explanation for what their purpose was. I'm sure it had to do with road taxes, fuel taxes, commercial vehicle rules, or similar, but I am hoping for a more specific answer.

Many thanks,

Tom
