cheap solution after hacking fenders

I just got an 85 swb with 3/4 ton axles and 8" superlift springs all around. I am running 38.5x15x15 on 15x14 rims. I took it out for the first time today and got her real twisted up. I will tell you what, boggers and fenders don't work well together. I have to hack the fenders, no big deal, but what to do about the sharp 18ga edge that will be left. I would hate to get the tires stuffed in the fenders again and slice the tire in half. Last time a welded up an 2 inch strip at an right angle to get rid of the edge, but this time I am lazy and cheap and its going on a truck I am gonna beat the hell out of so who cares what she looked like. Any suggestions? I thought of the door bumpers that old people put on the doors so they don't dent the car next to them at the store. Also fender flares are too expensive, and will keep the truck clean. With a clean truck, how do I hide the rust and rattle can paint job?! I will get pics up as soon as I get some.
