Heat Hose Routing

I can't find a good picture of how my hoses should be hooked up for my heater.

I'm starting from scratch here, since everything is torn apart and the original setup had been scabbed together.

From what I can tell, it looks like one hose runs from the thermostat housing to the heater core and then another hose runs from the heater core to the water pump. I think I have that part down fairly well. But the valving has me confused. Does a valve go on each hose? And what is the valve really for? Is it just to turn off the water? Or is it for adjustments in flow?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick
