alternator help

Battery keeps dieing(sp). Mechanic told me problem could be my voltage regulator keeping contact and draining it since he couldn't find a short anywhere. He said if I went with a single wire alternator that this would do away with the external regulator on the rad. support and take care of it. Does this sound right, and if so, how do I hook one of these one wire deals up? What about the old regulator? Etc......any help is greatly appreciated.
