Signal Stat questions--

Do the Signal Stat hazard lights all have their own flasher canister, or do some of them have it built-in and its internal?

I pulled one from a truck the other day, and it's got a wire going to a separate canister (I think that's what it is). I don't remember this on any of the others I've come across. And unfortunately, my parts and I are all scattered to the winds right now, so I can't pull them out and compare.
